Weigh in number one

Soooooo I have been using My Fitness Pal to count calories, Map My Walk to monitor my walking and I've been heading out for a lunchtime walk everyday as part of Westfield Health's Walking Lunch Campaign.

I have lost weight numerous times before but ALWAYS put it back on. This time it feels different. We are trying to be really sensible and not deny ourselves anything. We still have a takeaway every Saturday night but instead of ordering a full curry, naan, chips and rice we will now share half a curry with rice each. Instead of ordering battered chicken and sweet and sour sauce from the Chinese we will order stir fried King Prawns with chilli and garlic to share with boiled rice on the side. We also make sure we balance this out so if we are having a high calorie dinner we will make sure our lunch and breakfast are low in calories and that we've incorporated a little bit of exercise into our day too.

I've been to a few blogging events and enjoyed a few cocktails - I've made sure I have chosen Prosecco-based cocktails though which are lower in calories and I have even enjoyed a 3 course meal out.

I've also been out for Sunday lunch and rather than ordering a starter, main and dessert I've just eaten a main course and felt satisfied.

We've made some changes to our days out too and I've walked 10km three times in the past two weeks which has really made a difference plus we walked around Beamish rather than catching the trams which I'm sure helped too.

The other main change is that we don't drink anything at home apart from water, black coffee (plus we sometimes have a few beers on a weekend but make sure we count this in our calories for the day). I am not sure on the research but I have read that drinking 'diet' drinks makes you hungry and I would agree with this. I've definitely noticed a difference drinking just water.

Sooooo after 2 weeks of making these changes, how have I done???

Woohoo, that's right - a full 7 lb! Very chuffed with this. I am even prouder of Steve who has lost an epic 11 lb! At the moment we are weighing ourselves every 2 weeks due to Steve's work pattern.

Obviously we still have a very long way to go and this is only our first weigh in. Past experience tells me that I always lose a lot at the beginning so I definitely won't expect this again.

I have set my My Fitness Pal app for me to lose 2lb per week which allows me 1290 calories per day. I am going to aim for 2lb a week loss until 16th July (my friend's wedding) and then I am going to move it down to 1.5lb per week which is hopefully more sustainable and sensible.

One last thing - I rarely used to eat breakfast but have changed my habits now and will usually eat a small amount of granola, fruit and zero fat yoghurt (240 kcals). This has made a huge difference to my hunger and definitely the way forward. My mam has been telling me about this for years and I should have listened!!

26/4/16 - Weigh In One - 7 lbs lost

I would LOVE you to add me on My Fitness Pal. I honestly can't recommend it enough. It really helps you keep on track. I have been good and added EVERYTHING to it and we have weighed all of our food too - I even added the time I scoffed 4 custard creams. Oooops! I have been surprised by the amount calories in some foods though (skinless chicken thighs I'm looking at you!!) and using it helps you to make better food choices.

It's also great that you can still enjoy going out and the odd treat, I think it's so much more sustainable than crash diets. I'm Nellyscupcakes on mfp xx

  8. I used My Fitness Pal last year when I was on my 12 week challenge and it was a big help, sometimes you don't realise how much all of the little calories here and there add up so it's good to keep track. I might start using it again this year.
Well done on losing 7lbs, that's amazing! I think you are just right balancing it all out, you can't totally deny yourself a little treat or you will end up caving x

    1. The little calories definitely add up don't they! I am amazed at some of the calories in some of the things I've eaten in the past which I've thought are actually ok x

  13. Hi Samantha. Well done on your weight loss. I have a 1929 day streak on My Fitness Pal :-) It is not an obsession but a way of life!! My husband and I both log in every day. I have lost 2-3 stone although the third stone tends to come and go! It is a fabulous app for keeping track of what you are eating and more importantly your exercise. The exercise part is so important. Keep it up it will be well worth it - and keep on eating breakfast - it's a great way to start the day.
