No 28 - Newcastle's hidden gem

No28 is somewhere in Newcastle I have to admit I had never heard of. It is tucked away above the Grainger market in the heart of the city (entrance opposite Cafe Royal) and we must have walked past it on numerous occasions. We have clearly been living in some sort of black hole as the bar come bistro has won numerous awards including best late night venue in 2014.

With my lovely friend Rebecca from rebeccavose.co.uk

There was a little bit of a buzz in the air as the North East Bloggers were invited to road test No28's Christmas menu this week. Christmas can ALWAYS come early in our house and I cannot explain how excited I was to walk upstairs to hear a full Christmas soundtrack playing in the bar. Goodness knows what the regulars must have thought!

I fell in love with the bar's interior which was very quirky with lots of fairy lights and interesting objects and art to look at including their very own resident dalek!

Drinks wise, we were spoilt for choice with a wide selection of cocktails, wine, beers and prosecco to choose from (which by the way is only £15 per bottle until 9pm Sunday-Friday). The bar manager seriously knows his stuff so don't be scared to ask for recommendations if you fancy trying something different.

No 28 are offering a Christmas Canapes package this year. For just £8 per head you can expect Turkey and Cranberry croquettes, Smoked salmon mousse, beetroot and dill crostini, Chicken and chorizo pate and more. Chef David Hallum prepares everything from scratch and any leftovers or ingredients which aren't used are sent to Newcastle's peoples kitchen to help the homeless which is a lovely gesture.

My iphone photographs really don't do the food any justice - we were fighting over extra canapes, everything was really fresh and delicious. My expectations were certainly exceeded.

I was worried that no28 was going to be a bit too 'studenty' and perhaps I was a little old for this sort of place now (I'm 31). This was definitely not the case - the bar was filled with people from all walks of life and a good mix of ages. No one was out of place. I am adding no28 to our list of bars to visit again when we're next in town and can't wait to try a few of their Christmas cocktails in December.
