Bespoke, local and handmade jewellery from Lulu & Charles

At the age of 31 I have finally decided it is now time to start investing in myself. Gone are the days of shopping at Primark for clothes that will only last one season. I know my style and shape now and I think it makes much more sense to invest in clothes and accessories that are going to last.

When it comes to jewellery, my style is simple. I usually wear two silver tiffany hearts however I was looking for a change to match this new me. When Jayne from LuLu & Charles read my 'year of me' post last month, they contacted me and asked if they could design my very own 'Mrs R' necklace as a symbol to celebrate this new me. Of course I said yes. Sometimes writing your own blog brings amazing opportunities and I couldn't wait for Jayne to design a special necklace just for me.

A little bit of history - Jayne's father was a goldsmith and she spent her childhood watching him carefully craft fine jewellery from start to finish. Creativity certainly ran in the family and Jayne went on to gain a 1st class BA (hons) degree in fashion and textiles and went on to successfully work in the industry. As time went on, Jayne started her own family and like many (myself included) she decided to set up her own jewellery business with her husband and father which could work flexibly around their family whilst keeping the traditional craft of jewellery making alive in the North East.

The Design Process

When you buy handmade, you aren't just buying something that has been churned out with thousands of other products from a machine - you are buying something individual and bespoke that has been designed just for you. I loved that Jayne contacted me with a few initial sketches and asked for my input into the designs. I was encouraged to choose my favourite and asked if there were any changes we would like to make. How fantastic! I can definitely say my necklace will be one of of a kind.

Another week passed and I was sent an image direct from the Lulu & Charles workshop. I can't describe how exciting it is to see your jewellery taking shape and it was a lovely touch to be involved in this process.

Finally, we were directed to a guide which helped us choose our chain length. I like fairly short chain as I wear high necked tops sometimes so opted for an 18" chain.

Our necklace was delivered a week or so later via Royal Mail signed for however we missed our postman (boooo!). I popped to the sorting office at the next available opportunity and opened my beautiful gift. It was perfectly wrapped with a hand written note from my jewellery designer, again, such a lovely little touch.

Isn't it gorgeous!

I couldn't wait to wear my necklace and it's first outing was for a BonBar party that evening. I haven't taken it off since! The beauty of the necklace is that it is something I can wear during the day or for an evening out.

I absolutely adore my personalised sterling silver necklace and have already received lots of compliments when I've been out and about. I think it would especially make a wonderful gift for an anniversary or bride to wear on her wedding day. Priced at only £59.99 it is extremely reasonably priced for the attention to detail, care and workmanship that has gone into the design and production.

Lulu & Charles create a lovely selection of handmade jewellery including for children, him and her and can even design a special piece of jewellery just for you with their bespoke service.

I have made a vow this year to only buy local or handmade Christmas gifts for the grown ups in my life this year and think a gift from Lulu & Charles would be truly appreciated by some of the lovely ladies in my family. If you are thinking or ordering, expect jewellery to take 2-4 weeks to create. Delivery is free across the UK.

On a final note, make sure you follow Lulu & Charles on instagram - their photographs are always stunning!

What do you think about having a piece of jewellery designed just for you?
